11-year old girl witnesses fatal shooting by two teen boys, ages 15 and 18

An elderly security guard at a Detroit church was fatally shot by two teens, 15-year-old Anthony Williams, who apparently pulled the trigger, and 18-year old Alandre Boone.  The shooting was witnessed by an 11-year old girl.

A child took the witness stand Thursday in Detroit's 36th District Court and recounted what she saw: two teenagers approach an 84-year-old church security guard, with one firing a fatal shot as the man yelled for help.

"They shot him and ran," said the 11-year-old, testifying during the preliminary examination of Alandre Boone, 18, and Anthony Williams, 15. Authorities asked members of the news media not to release the child's identity.

Boone and Williams were ordered to stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court on charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm in the death of Joseph Lewis Jr. He was shot May 9 while guarding the Victory Way Assembly Church of God in Christ parking lot on Tireman.

"They are going to be in a lot of pain," Anthony Lewis, 51, said outside 36th District Court. "This is a tragedy for Detroit and a wake-up call. We've got to do something on our streets."

Prosecutors say Boone and Williams assaulted Lewis around 8:30 p.m. May 9 in his car parked in the lot of the Victory Way Assembly Church of God in Christ on Tireman.

Authorities say in the struggle, Lewis suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"From all reports, Mr. Lewis faithfully guarded his church, took care of his friends and was kind to all," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Wednesday in a statement.

Williams' attorney, Donald Cook, told the magistrate Wednesday the ninth-grader didn't appear to have a juvenile record and had family support in court.

But Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Scott Ehlfeldt told Barthwell that Williams' living arrangement isn't stable and he has a lengthy juvenile record for offenses, including first-degree home invasion, unlawful driving away, truancy and curfew violations. He also has made statements that put him at the scene of Lewis' shooting, Ehlfeldt said.
....Anthony Lewis said his father, nicknamed "Uncle Joe," was well-known for his work as a security guard for 55 years at various properties and churches in Detroit.

"They took the life of a great man and a good citizen," he said. "My father would have given them money if they wanted it. Everybody loved him."

Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.
